The short answer
A Shopify Partner is a professional or an agency enrolled in Shopify's partner program, which exists to build and hand over client stores. There is an advantage to hiring one, but it is smaller and more specific than the sales pitch usually paints, because joining the program is free (Shopify Help Center). What the program documents is a store built in its own environment and transferred to your name, collaborator access without handing over a password, and a directory with reviews.
Other promises repeated out there, such as priority support with Shopify's engineering team or an ERP integration "with no errors from day one", do not appear in the documentation or depend on the professional. This article checks each one, so you know what you are buying. Anyone looking for the service itself finds the work on the Shopify page.
1. The five most repeated promises, checked
Anyone researching the topic finds the same list of advantages. The table below sets each one against the official documentation, read on 2026-10-07.
| Promise | What the documentation supports | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| You only pay for the platform when the store is ready and transferred | You choose the plan when you receive the store. The documentation does not detail the cost of the store during the build | Largely true, with a caveat |
| The partner has official training | Free content exists, but the badge requires a paid assessment, lasts 2 years and the Academy is in English | Partial |
| Priority support directly with Shopify engineering | 24-hour support, usually by chat or email, routed by type of question. The page does not mention priority, a deadline or direct access to engineering | Not supported as priority |
| A choice of apps that keeps the store fast | The official pages read for this article do not cover this | Depends on the professional |
| A safe integration with checkout and Brazilian ERPs | The program does not cover shipping, invoices or a Brazilian ERP | Depends on the professional |
The paragraphs that follow detail each row and the sources.
A point of transparency
The same program page says the partner may receive from Shopify a monthly share "for every client you refer, theme you design, or app you build". That does not make anyone suspect. It means that, when recommending the platform, the professional may have a gain tied to it. The question "how are you paid on this project" is a fair one, and an honest answer is short.
2. Promise 1: the store is built apart and passes to your name
Shopify provides a store type called a client transfer store. The documentation describes it as a store the partner sets up during the build and, when it is ready, transfers to the client (Shopify.dev). The flow has three steps: the partner builds the store, enters the client's email and the client accepts the invite and chooses the plan.
What this confirms about the promise: "Your client selects a plan when they receive the transfer", and the partner does not change the store's plan. The plan decision stays with you. What the documentation does not say is how much it costs to keep the store during the build, or who pays for it. Treat that as a contract item: ask in writing that no platform subscription be billed in your name before you accept.
Rules that change the agreement
- The invite expires in seven days. "Pending transfers expire after seven days if the client doesn't accept."
- There is no free trial and no promotion after the transfer. Anyone expecting to "try the plan" after accepting should know this beforehand.
- The plan has to support what was built. During the build, the store has most of the features of the Advanced plan. A feature tested there may not exist on the plan you choose, so check the plan's feature list before you accept. Starter, for example, uses only the Spotlight theme and does not group products into collections (Shopify Help Center).
What the store cannot do while it is being built
According to the same documentation, the store accepts unlimited test orders through the test gateway, but it does not accept a real transaction. It only installs free or partner-friendly apps, it does not install custom apps, and it keeps the password page. There also cannot be active Shopify financial products, such as Payments, Balance, Credit and Capital, at the moment of transfer.
The practical consequence: real payment, the invoice and any custom app are only checked end to end after the store is on your account. The agreement should include a real order on the day of the cutover.
A development store is not for this
There is a common and expensive mistake. A development store is a free test environment, but the documentation says: "Dev stores can't be transferred to a client" (Shopify.dev, Development stores).
| Store type | What it is for | Does it pass to the client? |
|---|---|---|
| Development store | Testing an app or a theme | No |
| Client transfer store | Building the client's store | Yes, by invite |
Source: Client transfer stores and Development stores, read on 2026-10-07. Ask the professional which type they will use. If it is a development store, the handover into your name does not happen on the official path, and the work may have to be redone.
3. Promise 2: the partner has official training
Partly true. Shopify Academy offers free and paid content, and Shopify itself says it helps the partner "build credibility and advance in the Partner Program" (Shopify Help Center, Academy). Three details on the page change how to read it:
- A free course does not award a certificate. "Free courses on Shopify Academy don't award badges or certificates of completion."
- The badge is paid, it expires and it has to be redone. It requires buying and passing an assessment, it is issued by Credly and it lasts 2 years. If it is not retaken, the badge is removed.
- The Academy is available only in English, with a few courses and assessments in Japanese.
For you, that means a verified badge shows the professional studied and passed a test on content the platform defined, within a validity window. It does not show that they have already delivered a store like yours, or that they know the Brazilian market. Use it as one item in the conversation, next to work they show and reviews. The page also notes that verified skills count toward the partner's level in the program.
If you have not created your Shopify store yet, talk to me before you do: the store is born as a development store, built ready and transferred to your name. Send your current platform, the plan and the URL.
4. Promise 3: priority support with Shopify engineering
This is the promise that does not hold up the way it is usually told. The official support page for partners says the partner has access "to Shopify Support and self-serve support resources 24/7" (Shopify Help Center, Getting support). It also says that "most support is available by chat or email" and that phone support exists for Plus or Enterprise stores.
The same page explains that, when contacting Shopify Support, the partner is routed to the type of support they need: partner account, merchant store, Plus and Enterprise stores, or API and code. API, code and developer support only shows up when they enter through the partner organization or a Plus store.
What that means: there is an official channel, open 24 hours, that the professional uses for their own technical questions. The page does not mention priority, a response deadline or direct access to engineering. If your project depends on a fast answer, that guarantee comes from the support contract with the professional, not from the badge.
5. Promises 4 and 5: lean apps, checkout and Brazilian ERPs
The last two promises are about quality of work, and none of the official pages read for this article cover them.
Lean apps. It is true that someone who builds a store without a criterion can pile up apps that do a small job. But choosing what to install, what to solve in the theme and what that costs in speed is the professional's judgment, not a benefit of the program. The only documented rule is the one for the build environment: only free or partner-friendly apps can be installed, and custom apps do not install while the store sits in the partner's organization.
Checkout, shipping, invoices and ERP. The program does not cover Correios, Melhor Envio, Bling, Tiny or invoice issuance. Among the filters official help lists for finding partners (accepting new clients, price range in dollars, services, location, industry, languages spoken and level), none of them cover this (Shopify Help Center, Hiring help). The promise of a sync "with no errors from day one" has no support, because, as section 2 showed, real payment is only tested after the transfer.
| What you need | How to check it with the professional |
|---|---|
| Lean apps | Ask for the list of planned apps, the reason for each one, and what they would do in the theme |
| Shipping and checkout | Ask how shipping is calculated and how the real-order test will be done |
| Invoice and ERP | Ask which ERP, who issues the invoice and how the order reaches the system |
| After launch | Ask for the response time, and what counts as an adjustment versus a new service, in writing |
This table is a hiring script, not a statement from Shopify.
6. What the program delivers and almost nobody cites
Three documented benefits do not appear on the list of five promises, and they are worth more than some of those promises.
Collaborator access, without a password
The partner enters your store with their own account, and you do not share a login. Official help describes the control that stays with you (Shopify Help Center, Collaborator accounts):
- "Collaborators don't count towards your store's user limit."
- The owner creates roles with the permissions the work requires.
- The collaborator enters with a request code that you generate.
- If they do not log in for 90 days, access expires on its own.
- Removal is permanent and cannot be undone.
- Store ownership does not pass to a collaborator.
On a transfer store, the partner remains a collaborator by default after handover. Post-launch support uses the same model, and you revoke it whenever you want without changing your account password.
A directory with reviews tied to real work
The Partner Directory lists more than 30 services and invites the merchant to look at "reviews, work samples, certifications" before deciding (Shopify, Partner Directory). Contacting does not commit you: "you're not committed to hiring them". A review only comes from a merchant on a paid plan, after the partner has acted as a collaborator for at least one week, and it appears within 48 hours (Hiring help).
The levels help you calibrate the size of the firm: Select usually serves small and mid-sized businesses, Plus mid-sized and large ones, Premier large companies and Platinum global companies. A high score is a signal, not a verdict. Read the comments and see whether the service that was reviewed looks like yours.
Program rules
Official help says partners "are required to follow the Partner Program Agreement" and that there is a form to report a violation (Shopify Help Center). It is an extra layer, not a substitute for a contract: price, deadline and responsibility for the outcome are still set between you and the professional.
7. Questions to ask before you sign
- Will the store be created as a client transfer store? A development store does not pass to the client.
- Who chooses the plan, and when? In the official flow, it is you, when you receive the store, and the plan has to support the theme and the collections.
- Will there be a platform subscription in my name before I accept? Put the answer in writing.
- What will my access look like after handover? The expected model is a collaborator, with a role and a code.
- How will the real order, the invoice and the ERP integration be tested? During the build there is no real transaction.
- Which apps do you plan to install, and why?
- Can I see directory reviews and a piece of work similar to mine?
- How are you paid, and what is included in support after launch?
If the store is coming from another platform, the path is in the article on how to migrate from Nuvemshop without losing SEO and in the Loja Integrada migration checklist.
Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of hiring a Shopify Partner?
The documented advantage is structural: the store is built in its own environment and transferred to your name, you choose the plan when you receive it, the professional's access is as a collaborator and the directory shows reviews from merchants. Promises such as priority support or an error-free integration depend on the contract and on the professional.
Does a Shopify Partner get priority support from Shopify?
The official page talks about 24-hour support, usually by chat or email, routed by type of question, and about API and code support through the partner organization. It does not mention priority or a response deadline (Shopify Help Center).
Does being a Shopify Partner mean a qualified professional?
No. The program is free and starts at the Registered level (Shopify Help Center). Qualification shows up as a directory level, reviews, work shown and verified badges.
Is the store in my name or in the professional's?
In yours, if the flow is the official one. The transfer store passes ownership to the client by invite, and the invite expires in seven days (Shopify.dev).
Does the professional need my password?
No. The correct access is a collaborator account, with a request code, a role with limited permissions and removal possible at any time (Shopify Help Center).
Does contacting a partner in the directory obligate me to hire them?
No. Shopify states that, when you contact a partner, you take on no commitment to hire them (Shopify Help Center).
Conclusion
The advantage of hiring a Shopify Partner is what the program documents: a store built apart and transferred to your name, a plan you choose when you receive it, collaborator access without handing over a password, and a directory with reviews tied to real work. The badge alone proves nothing, because joining is free.
The rest of the list that circulates, such as priority support, lean apps and ERP integration, is skill and contract. Ask for it in writing, check the invoice and a real order, and choose by the combination of level, reviews and work shown.
If you want to know whether your store fits this calculation, send your current platform, the plan and the URL. If you have not created your Shopify store yet, talk to me before you do: the store is born as a client transfer store, built ready and passed to your name.
